Chiropractic & Pregnancy

One of the most important times for a woman to be receiving chiropractic care is during pregnancy.

WHY?

Because many of the common symptoms during pregnancy, such as low back pain, neck pain, headaches, and heartburn, are related to the stress on her nervous system.

Chiropractic care throughout pregnancy removes interference to the mother's nervous system, enhancing baby development and uterine function.  It balances her pelvis, eliminates unwanted tension in muscles and ligaments, and allows for optimal fetal positioning.

Pregnancy is NOT a disease!  A woman’s body was designed to create, carry, and deliver a baby with ease.  Pregnant women experience many hormonal, structural, and emotional changes during this process.  Another being is growing inside of you causing your body to make modifications.

For example, a woman’s center of gravity changes as the weight of the baby pulls the spine forward, the muscles of the back thicken and the abdomen will anchor to support and stabilize the structure as the body changes.  This is coordinated by the nervous system and if there is any interference in the nervous system, tension will increase in the front of the body as it adapts to the altered communication.  This increased tension will cause the muscles and other soft tissue structures to do most of the work of supporting the baby.  The mom will have added strain creating shifts in her overall structure leading to tension on the nervous system, as well as on the other systems of the body.  These shifts may create less room for the baby to turn and move, and may potentially increase the likelihood of breech and mechanical deliveries.

The mother’s pelvis also needs to be able to accommodate the baby as it descends, and any joints that are under tension may distort the pelvic opening by up to 4 cm, thus making it difficult for the baby to pass through.

Being interference free can assist you with ease of delivery, pain before, during, and after labor, proper positioning of the baby, and more!

But that's not all... chiropractic isn't only important for the pregnant mom, but also for the developing baby as well.  Did you know that a baby's heart starts beating at 24 days?  Its eyes are formed in 36 days?

These processes are controlled by the nervous system and occur innately!

If the nerves going to your reproductive system are working correctly, then your baby is able to form and develop with 100% potential.  The first thing to form in-utero is the neural tube, the beginning stage of the nervous system (brain, spinal cord, nerves).  It is responsible for the growth and development to follow.  It directs all of the organs, muscles, tissues, glands, skin, and cells in forming.  If your nervous system has interference, then your baby may not be receiving the proper nerve messages that are required for proper growth and development.

Studies:

  • A study by the American Medical Association found that women who received regular chiropractic care during their 3rd trimester carried and delivered with more comfort.

  • Another study concluded that with regular chiropractic adjustments mothers decreased the need for analgesics by 50% during their delivery.

  • Chiropractic care has also been shown to be able to relieve intrauterine constraint and decrease the average amount of time spent in labor.

  • Dr. Fallon revealed that new mothers who were adjusted regularly had a 24% reduction in labor time.  Mother’s delivering for the 2nd or 3rd time, who were adjusted regularly, had labor times that were 39% shorter.

  • A study done by Dr. Diakow reported in the Journal of Manipulation and Physical Therapy (JMPT) that women under regular chiropractic care had an 84% reduction in back pain during pregnancy.
