Chiropractic and Asthma

What is asthma?

Asthma is an acute and chronic inflammatory condition. There are a number of causes of the rising number of asthma cases, but if these factors were the only issue, then why wouldn’t ALL children living in the same house and breathing the same air suffer equally?

Some causes have been linked to a combination of factors, but most specifically the increase of chemicals in our environment – the air we breathe, the water we drink, the food we eat, the cleaning supplies we use, etc.. Insulated homes can trap chemicals, molds, formaldehyde and other irritants that are known to cause damage to the immune system, as well as neurological, reproductive (i.e. infertility), developmental, respiratory and other health problems.

Some research studies even show the link between the increasing use of cesarean births, head trauma, antibiotics, secondhand cigarette smoke, a diet high in inflammatory foods and our fascination with germ killing as the reasons behind asthma. However, you can still raise two children the EXACT same way and one will have asthma, and the other won’t. Why?

Physiopathic changes in spinal structures actually produce an inhibition of nerve impulses. Subjective and clinical findings associated with this syndrome include severe asthma attacks and bronchial asthma.

– Dr. Neville T. Usher, M.D.

The Chiropractic Connection

Your diaphragm is the primary muscle used for breathing and your lungs execute the act of breathing. Nerves that control each breath leave your brain and exit the spinal cord in the mid-neck (C3, C4 and C5) area and the upper back (T2, T3, and T4). Spinal problems in these areas can have a profound affect on the nerve supply to the diaphragm and the lungs, thereby removing interference in these two regions can help restore proper nervous system control of the lungs.

In addition to the diaphragm, there are several other muscles that contribute to breathing, known as accessory muscles of respiration. If nerve supply is compromised to these muscles due to a subluxation in the spine, then breathing may be affected.

Research

Research has shown that an imbalance may exist in the nervous system that supplies the bronchial tubes of an asthmatic individual.

– Dr. Francis Adams, M.D.

In fact, research published in the Journal of Vertebral Subluxation Research found that 81 children with asthma who received chiropractic care over a 60-day period saw a 44.9% decrease in the number of “attacks” (compared to 66.5% decrease with medication) and 31% of the subjects voluntarily chose to decrease their medication. All due to improved nervous system control of the lungs!

A study that was published in the Holland Medical Journal found that out of 113 families with asthmatic children, 73% used chiropractic care. 92% of those families reported that chiropractic care was beneficial for their children.
