Symptoms - Friend or Foe?

Are your symptoms your friend or foe?

The current view of health is that if we have symptoms, we are sick and if we have no symptoms then we are healthy. And unfortunately, everyone, especially the medical approach and pharmaceutical industry, is interested in getting rid of the symptoms.

However, some of the sickest people are symptom free. They don't feel anything because their bodies have shut down due to too much STRESS (physical, mental/emotional, & chemical) or the use of drugs which acts as nothing more than a bandaid.

The reverse is also true - a person with symptoms is not necessarily “sick”.

Not all symptoms are bad. When you begin to understand how the body functions, certain symptoms can actually be a sign that the body is healing. Stopping these symptoms can inhibit the healing process.

The body and brain communicate through the nervous system. When the body is in trouble, the nervous systems sends messages to the brain alerting it of trouble, and the brain sends instructions back to the body on how to heal.

For example:

  • a fever is the body's first line of defense against infection

  • nausea and diarrhea are two ways the body expels whatever we ingested that it considered toxic

  • pain is how the body lets us know to be careful and to avoid using the injured joint

  • swelling provides a natural splint to protect the injured joint and gets hot as the body increases the circulation to repair and heal the injured tissue

  • a runny nose is the body sluffing off the old respiratory lining, much like the trees sluff off their leaves and animals sluff off their winter coats

  • chest pains could be from a heart that aches after years of abuse

  • ulcers let us know that we have let life get too stressful

  • a racing pulse will indicate that we are facing fears

Every symptom our body lovingly gives us is a message. The body can only speak to us in two ways, pain or pleasure, discomfort or comfort, ease or dis-ease. We can either choose to listen to it or choose to mask it.

But if your check engine light came on in your car - would you take your car in to the mechanic or would you put duct tape over it?

Most people would take their car in to a mechanic. Ignoring the check engine light would be ludicrous.

A question I receive often from my practice members is:

"Should I continue chiropractic care if I don’t have any symptoms and I feel better?"

My answer is YES!

Just because symptoms disappear, it does not mean that your injury has healed. Most people in my office have some level of spinal degeneration (decay) which has taken years to develop. Slips, falls, accidents, chemical stressors (toxins, toxic air), and mental/emotional stressors (frustration, anger, financial stress) add up over the course of your lifetime which adversely affect the health of your spine and nervous system.

The longer you wait to have your spine checked, the longer it will take to heal your injury and restore your body's natural healing process.

Those who stop care when they "FEEL GOOD" return to me with the same problems and injuries which brought them to my office in the first place, only it is usually worse. On the other hand, people who commit to regular chiropractic care find that their original problems rarely return and they enjoy a higher quality of life.

During chiropractic care, it is possible for symptoms to increase because the body is becoming more functional and more aware, and the nerves are working at their optimum level again which means your brain is receiving the messages. Sometimes you may feel worse before you feel better due to this very fact.
