Chiropractic and Colic

Your tummy hurts. You have a terrible headache. You can’t poop. You struggle sleeping.

BUT YOU CAN’T TALK!

So how do you let people know that you’re not feeling good?

You cry! And cry… and cry… and cry! And your parents feel helpless.

Colic affects nearly 1/5 infants, typically beginning at birth and peaking between 3-6 weeks of age. It is the most common reason for visits to pediatricians.

Is it merely indigestion?

Infantile colic was first thought to be merely indigestion, but how can we know for sure? The most widely accepted definition of colic today is “unexplainable and uncontrollable crying in babies from 0 to 3 months old, more than 3 hours a day, more than 3 days a week for 3 weeks or more, usually in the afternoon and evening hours.”

THE CAUSE - BIRTH TRAUMA?

Even the most natural of birthing experiences can be traumatic for the baby’s delicate spinal cord and nervous system. Spinal distortions and tension in adults lead to neck and back pain – babies can suffer from this too and the only way they can tell you that they’re in pain is by crying.

Imagine having 60-90 pounds of force exerted on your spine as a baby - how might your body feel post-birth?

The trauma during birth often leads to cranial and spinal subluxations, which manifest in the form of infantile colic.

RESEARCH

Several studies have shown the effectiveness of chiropractic in helping to resolve infantile colic.

One study of 316 cases of colic showed satisfactory results with chiropractic adjustments in 94% of cases, with the results occurring within 2 weeks and an average of 3 treatments.

The results of a study published in the October 1999 issue of the Journal of Manipulative and Physiologic Therapeutics tracked a small group of 50 infants. Half received the drug dimethicone and the other half received a chiropractic adjustment. At the conclusion of the two-week study, the babies being adjusted saw a 67% reduction in crying and the drug therapy group saw a 38% reduction.

While large scale research results are lacking, and colic is considered a condition that resolves on its own with the passage of enough time, there are many case studies showing improvement, sometimes dramatic, among colicky babies with subluxations...and usually being resolved in 3 treatments.

Chiropractic is NOT a treatment for colic!

It is merely a treatment that restores proper functioning of the body so the body can do what it knows how to do best – heal itself!
